Open Street Map is an open source alternative to proprietary mapping services like google maps, it is not as fancy, but does the job and without big companies spying on you. How secure/private it is I cannot tell for sure, but it seems they have their own piwik analytics, but you can block that using a browser plugin if you want, still better than proprietary alternatives. The content is created by users and distributed under a creative common license. It has no fancy sattelite images, 3D view or street view from google spy cars, but it does the job. I read you can view sattelite or other images in Openstreetmap, but it is often complicated and requires other Apis, because the media is not freely licensed, so it cannot be directly provided by Openstreetmap.
