Removing the halo is an important little task in game design for alpha textures like they are used in vegetation. Why you need to do this is also very good explained on the site itself. You can do that also in your image editing program, but in Gimp I found this a bit complicated to do and you need a little workaround, this tool does it automatically for you and also has a batch convert function, so you can even convert multiple textures at once. Small a but useful tool.
